🟥Born – 4 November 1871 in Karapara, Bengal Presidency, British India.

🟥Died – 30 April 1942 in Ranchi, Bihar Province, British India.

🟥Occupation – Lawyer, Ethnographer, Cultural Anthropologist, Lecturer, Reader.

EARLY LIFE

Born on 4 November 1871 to Purna Chandra Roy, a member of the Bengal Judicial Service, in a village in Khulna district (now in Bangladesh).

EDUCATION

After his father’s death in 1885, he got his education at his maternal uncle’s home in Calcutta. In 1892, he completed his graduation in English literature from the General Assembly’s Institution (now ,Scottish Church College). Then, he got a postgraduate degree in English from the same institution, and subsequently studied law at the Ripon College (now Surendranath College).

CAREER

S.C.Roy worked for some time as a headmaster at the Mymen Singh High School.He joined as a Principal at the GEL Mission High School in Ranchi where,he became aware of the plight of the tribals. So,he decided to left teaching and started practicing as a lawyer . He became a pleader in the district court in the 24 Parganas in Calcutta in 1897. A year later, he started practicing at the court of the judicial commissioner , Ranchi.

HIS INSPIRATION

AsalawyerintheinnerdistrictsoftheChotanagpurDivison,hisinterestintheconditionofthe“Tribal”peoplegrew.
HewasmovedbytheplightoftheMunda,Oraon,andothertribalgroups,whoweresubjectedtocontinuedoppressionbyanapatheticcolonialadministration,aswellasageneralcontemptforthemincourtsoflaw,where“upper-caste Hindu lawyers hadlittleknowledgeoftheircustoms,religions,customarylaws,andlanguages. Asaresult,he spendyearsanddecadesamongindigenouspeoples,studyingtheirlanguages,doingethnography,andinterpretingtheircustoms,practises and religion.

BEGINNING OF HIS CAREER

Hesubsequently,wentontowritegroundbreakingmonographsthatpavedthewayforfutureresearh andknowledge.Heisthus, considered as the first Indianethnologist,ethnographer,or
anthropologist.

🏅Founding Member of Patna University and National Institute of Sciences.

🏅 The Sarat Chandra ROY Institute of Anthropological Studies, Ranchi was established in 1969 to honour him.
