National Parks/Wilde Life Sanctuary of Jharkhand
National Park Of Jharkhand
Introduction – National Park, Wildlife Sanctuary and Biological Park are found in 2.63% of the total area of Jharkhand. National parks, wildlife sanctuaries and Biological Park occupy 9% of the protected forest of Jharkhand.
Betla National Park
It is the only national park in the state of Jharkhand. It is in Latehar and Palamu district, most of its area comes under Latehar district. The park is spread over an area of 231.67 sq km within the Palamu Tiger Reserve. The North Koel River passes through this National Park. This national park was established in 1986. Project Tiger is being run by the Government of India here since 1973-74. The first lion/tiger census in the world was done here in 1932. Apart from tiger, lion, leopard, elephant, wild boar, gaur, deer in this national park.
Note:- In 1932, the first census of tigers / lions in the world was done here. This sanctuary was the first sanctuary in the world where tigers were counted on the basis of footprint count.
Wildlife Sanctuary Of Jharkhad
There are a total of 11 wildlife sanctuaries in Jharkhand, in which there are 10 animal sanctuaries and one bird sanctuary:-
1.Palamu Wildlife Sanctuary
Palamu Sanctuary is the only national level sanctuary of Jharkhand. Rest of the 10 sanctuaries of Jharkhand are of state level. It was established in 1976. It is the largest sanctuary in the state of Jharkhand, its area is 794.33 sq km. Here elephants, sambar etc. are found. It is located in Palamu district of Jharkhand.
Palamu Tiger Project – This is a central government project which has been started for the conservation and development of tiger. This project is being run since 1974. The participation of the center state in this is 50:50.
Note:- At present the director of Palamu Tiger Project is Kumar Ashutosh. According to the 2019 Tiger Census report, the number of tigers here was reported to be 0, but in 2020, there are signs of tigers again.
2. Lawalong Wildlife Sanctuary
This is a famous Wildlife Sanctuary Of Jharkhand. This wildlife sanctuary is located in Lawlong block of Chatra district. It was declared as a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1978. It is the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Jharkhand. Its area is 207 sq km. Tiger, Leopard, Wild Boar, Nilgai, Deer in this wildlife sanctuary.Touching this sanctuary, three rivers flow, Lilajan, Chako and Amanat.
3. Udhwa Bird Sanctuary
It is located in Udhwa Block of Sahebganj District of Jharkhand. It was built in 1991, this bird sanctuary is spread over 5.65 sq km. There are two lakes in this bird sanctuary, Barhail Lake and Patoda Lake. The area of Barhail Lake is 4.10 sq km while that of Patoda Lake is 1.55 sq km. Barhail district is also known as Brahma Jamalpur. Getting here comes with the help of a drain from the Ganges river. Here there is a shortage of water during the summer. 83 types of bird species are found here. Birds from Central Asia and Siberia come to this sanctuary.
Note:- National Plan for Conservation Aquatic Ecosystem is a central government-run planning scheme. In which the financial contribution of the center and the state is 60:40. The conservation and development work of other bird sanctuaries of Jharkhand is being done through this scheme.
4. Wolf Sanctuary, Mahuadandr
This is a famous Wildlife Sanctuary Of Jharkhand. India’s only wolf sanctuary is located in Mahuatand, Jharkhand.This sanctuary is built in the Chhechari valley. Here the extinct wolf has been given protection. Apart from the wolf, there is also a deer in this sanctuary. It was established in 1976. It is spread over an area of 63.250 sq km in Chechari valley of Pat area of Chotanagpur. The Budha river crosses this sanctuary. The responsibility of taking care of this sanctuary would be under the Director of Palamu Sanctuary.
5. Parasnath Wildlife Sanctuary
This is a famous Wildlife Sanctuary Of Jharkhand. This sanctuary is located in the Parasnath hill area of Giridih district.NH-19 (GT Road) passes from its middle. This sanctuary was established in 1981. Its area is 49.33 sq km. Leopard, Sambar, Deer and Nilgai are found in this sanctuary.
6. Palkot Wildlife Sanctuary
This is a famous Wildlife Sanctuary Of Jharkhand. This sanctuary is jointly spread in Gumla Simdega district of Jharkhan. It was established by the Government of Bihar in 1990. This sanctuary is spread over an area of 183.18 sq km. Here the largest number of bears are found. Apart from this, there is a nest of leopard, elephant, fox, monkey. The South Koel in the east of this sanctuary and the Shankh river in the west forms the boundary. Banki, Torpa and Palmara rivers pass through touching this sanctuary. Tapkara Reservoir Project is located near this sanctuary.
7. Koderma Wildlife Sanctuary
This sanctuary has been established in 1985 in Koderma district. Its area is 177.35 sq km. Leopard, sambar, nilgai, deer etc. are preserved here
8. Topchanchi Wildlife Sanctuary
Topchanchi Sanctuary is located in Dhanbad district. Its area is 8.75 sq km. It was established in 1978, a lake is situated in the middle of this sanctuary which is called Green Hill. Leopard, bear and deer live in this sanctuary.
9. Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary
This is a famous Wildlife Sanctuary Of Jharkhand. This wildlife sanctuary is located in the East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand in the flow area of the river Swarnarekha. Some of its area comes in Ranchi district and Purulia district of West Bengal. Its total area is 193.22 sq km. NH-18 passes through Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary.
Dalma as a Wildlife Sanctuary was declared in 1976. In 2001, this sanctuary was brought under the Singhbhum Elephant Reserve under the Elephant Project. This sanctuary was inaugurated by Sanjay Gandhi. Dalma hills are located in this sanctuary. Apart from elephant, leopard, bear are also found in this sanctuary.
Singhbhum Elephant Reserve
Singhbhum Elephant Reserve is the first elephant reserve in India. It has been declared a reserve in 2001 under the Elephant Project. The reserve covers an area of 13,440 sq km which includes 8910.10 sq km of non-wild area and 4529.90 sq km of forested area. Out of this forested area, 2577.38 sq. km. core area and 1952.90 sq. km. This reserve is spread over West Singhbhum, East Singhbhum and Seraikela Kharsawan (Old Singhbhum) districts. Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary also comes inside this reserve area.
Elephant Project – This is a central government project which is being run since 1992. In this the ratio of Center and State participation is 60:40. Under this scheme, an elephant corridor is being built in the state.
10. Hazaribag Wildlife Sanctuary
It is located in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand. Its total area is 186.25 sq km. This is the first National Park of Jharkhand which was established in 1955 from Hazaribagh National Park. It was given the status of a wildlife sanctuary in 1976. Leopard, deer, Nilgai are found here.
11. Gautam Buddha Wildlife Sanctuary
It is located in Gaya district of Bihar. Some part of it touches the Koderma district of Jharkhand. Its total area is 259 sq km. It was established in 1976. Here tiger, leopard, chital etc.
